Bee & Goddess Small Coin Charm Pendant

The bee is one of the most enduring symbols of the ancient world, representing harmony, prosperity, devotion and the ordered rhythms of nature. For the people of Ephesos it carried an even deeper significance, serving as the sacred emblem of the city and expressing the close relationship between the natural and divine worlds.

The opposite side bears the head of a female figure wearing a mural crown, a crown formed as the fortified walls of a city. A symbol of protection and civic strength, the mural crown embodied the prosperity and identity of Ephesos, one of the greatest cities of ancient Ionia.

This bronze coin was struck in Ephesos during the fourth century BC, when the city flourished as a centre of trade, culture and religious devotion. The bee was closely associated with Artemis Ephesia, the city's patron goddess, whose magnificent temple was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Her priestesses were known as the Melissae, meaning "bees", making the insect an enduring symbol of the goddess and her sanctuary.
