History

The helmeted head of Athena, goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, dominates one side of the coin. Wearing a crested Corinthian helmet, Athena embodied courage, protection and military intelligence. Revered as the patron goddess of heroes and cities alike, she was a fitting symbol of strength guided by wisdom.

The reverse features the prow of a warship, a powerful emblem of naval supremacy. It commemorates the decisive Battle of Salamis in Cyprus in 306 BC, where Demetrios secured a famous naval victory. The ship's prow celebrates this triumph and the maritime power that helped shape the Hellenistic world.

This coin was struck during the reign of Demetrios I Poliorketes, one of the most celebrated successors of Alexander the Great. Demetrios earned the epithet Poliorketes, meaning "The Besieger", for his mastery of siege warfare and his relentless campaigns to establish Macedonian supremacy across the eastern Mediterranean. Following the victory at Salamis, Demetrios and his father, Antigonos I Monophthalmos, proclaimed themselves kings, marking a pivotal moment in the division of Alexander's empire.
