18K yellow gold ring featuring relief of a roman intaglio of crescent moon with seven stars.

Handmade in Rome.

History

This piece features replica of an ancient Roman intaglio featuring Emperor Hadrian, adorned with a crescent moon and seven stars. The stars are often thought to represent the five planets known to the ancient Romans—Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus, and Mercury—along with the Sun and Moon as seen during an eclipse.

This imagery is commonly associated with amulet iconography, particularly in this intaglio. Hadrian likely witnessed two solar eclipses in his lifetime: one after Nerva's death in A.D. 98, and another in A.D. 118. The crescent may symbolise the Sun and the star the Moon, with their alignment possibly representing a partial eclipse or the "diamond ring effect."

The significance of this imagery lies in celebrating the Sun's survival of the eclipse, symbolising a return to normalcy. Given the Roman flair for propaganda, this also conveys the message: “The emperor guided us through another trial.” Thus, the crescent and stars on this intaglio may represent both celestial events and the divine power of Emperor Hadrian.
