This necklace features a sterling silver coin depicting Alexander the Great, set in 18K gold and embellished with double set citrine and amethyst cabochons.

Handmade in Rome.

History

The coin depicts Herakles wearing the lion skin of the fierce Nemean lion, taken during his first labour. In Greek mythology, Herakles was the greatest of heroes, born of the god Zeus and made mortal, yet ultimately attaining divine status through the completion of the twelve great labours.

The idea of a man rising to godhood held powerful appeal for Alexander the Great, who closely identified with Herakles. By associating himself with the hero’s image, Alexander reinforced his own vision of strength, conquest and divine favour.
