Amor Vincit Omnia Pendant

Along with the lion skin, the gnarled club was the main attribute of the Greco-Roman hero Hercules, signifying strength and success against adversity. Eros, god of love and desire, on the other hand, is often represented in lamps, jewels and other objects of daily use, leaning or holding the demigod’s club. This symbolic representation was popular in the early centuries of the Roman Empire and symbolised that love can conquer and subdue even the greatest hero. In this type of iconography, Cupid was the personification of love and the gnarled club a metaphor of the hero’s strength and tenacity. In this intaglio we find an allegorical representation of these concepts with cupid’s arrow crossing with the gnarled club. So love can overcome and subdue everything with strength and tenacity but also with resistance and endurance.

“Omnia vincit amor et nos cedamus amori” (lit. “Love wins everything, let us surrender ourselves to love”) is a Latin phrase by Publio Virgilio Marone (Bucoliche X, 69). In the Italian construction it will then become “Amor vincit omnia”.
