Born about 222 B.C., Demetrius I, son of Euthydemus, ruled from circa 200 to 180 B.C. He was never defeated in battle, earning the epithet Aniketos (“Invincible”). About 180 B.C. he invaded India, conquering the Indus valley and advancing far into the Ganges plain. On his handsome bronze coinage, Demetrius placed the head of an elephant, with a kerykeion on the reverse-the symbolic staff carried by Greek heralds, and by the god Hermes.

From dark to green to a golden brown, it is the patina of aged treasure coins that gives them their unique beauty. You should never scrub, buff or use anything abrasive on your bronze and copper coins in an attempt to “polish them up.” You may clean your coin bezel (the metal frame around your coin) only with a soft, non-abrasive polishing cloth.
Depicted on the Coin
